Inherited from Ottoman Turkish گون آشری (gün aşırı),[1][2] from گون (gün) + آشوری (aşırı) (alternatively آشرو (aşıru), آشری (aşırı)),[3][4] equivalent to compound of gün (“day”) + aşırı (“excessive, extreme, too much, beyond”). Cognates with Azerbaijani günaşırı, Bashkir көн аша (kön aşa), Turkmen günaşa, günaşym, Tatar көн аша (kön aşa), Uyghur كۈن ئاشۇرۇپ (kün ashurup).
