From Middle High German hellec (“exhausted, thirsty”). Cognate with obsolete German hellig (“exhausted, thirsty”, also “discontent, recalcitrant”), Dutch hellig (“angry”). Probably related with Middle High German hel (“weak”) and/or Middle Dutch hael (“parched, droughty”), and further perhaps with Latin callus, Proto-Slavic *kaliti.
