From Old Norse *héri, from Proto-Germanic *hezô, a variant of Proto-Germanic *hasô. Kroonen (2011) states that the Icelandic é in this word arose from the breaking of a short e into ja, the result of which underwent an r-umlaut to je, eventually merging with é /jɛː/ in Icelandic. [1]
