From haeux (“rice”) + yangz, a morpheme from Chinese, often thought to be from 洋 (MC yang, “foreign”),[1] though Wei (2018) suggests that it is more likely from 皇 (MC hwang, “imperial”) instead.[2] Cognate with Bouyei hauxyaangz (“sorghum”).
