From Proto-Finnic *haistak. Related to Estonian haistma, Ingrian haissa (to stink, to smell), Livvi haižuo (to stink), Veps haišta and Votic aizõa (to stink, to smell). Probably ultimately derived from Proto-Finnic *haja- (whence haja- and haju (smell)).
