Etymology

From the numeral hat (six) +‎ van where van cannot be attested as an independent word (it is not the verb van). Compare also nyolcvan (80) as well as negyven (40), ötven (50), hetven (70), and kilencven (90). Possibly related to Finnish moni (see the other cognates there), deriving from Proto-Uralic *mone, *mune.[1] For the supposed sound change in Hungarian (m > v), compare név and nyelv.[2]
