Inherited from Middle French havir, from Old French havir (“to desire ardently”), either from Old French have ("pale; dull"; > French hâve) or from Frankish *haiju (“heat, burning”), akin to Old High German heiēn (“to dry; scorch; desiccate; singe”).

havir
This is a regular verb of the second conjugation, like finir, choisir, and most other verbs with infinitives ending in -ir. One salient feature of this conjugation is the repeated appearance of the infix -iss-.
