Of unclear origin, perhaps from a variant of Middle High German hutzen (“to move back and forth”), either of imitative origin or otherwise possibly from Proto-West Germanic *hottōn (“to shake, toss”), from Proto-Germanic *hud- (“to swing, rock, shake”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ket- or *kwēt- (“to shake, rock back and forth”).
