Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *(a)iˀskāˀtei; compare Latvian iẽskât (“to search for lice”), Proto-Slavic *jьskàti (“to look for”). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂i-sḱé-ti, the present of *h₂eys- (“to wish, desire”). Cognates include Proto-West Germanic *aiskōn (“to demand, question, claim”), Sanskrit इच्छति (iccháti, “to wish, strive for”), Old Armenian այց (aycʻ, “to visit, search”), Latin aeruscō (“to beg, ask for”).
