Contraction of ipecacuanha, from Portuguese ipecacuanha, from Tupi-Guarani ipekaaguéne (“emetic creeper”), from ipe (“small”) + kaa (“leaves”) + guéne (“vomit”); or from Tupian ɨpekakwánʸa, from ɨpeka (“duck”) + akwánʸa (“penis”).
