From Proto-Albanian *aidza + -ull, close to Ancient Greek αἴθαλος (aíthalos, “thick smoke, ashes, soot”). Phonetically possible also from Proto-Indo-European *eǵʰerom (“lake”), from the stem *eǵʰ- (“border”), cf. Proto-Balto-Slavic *eźera-, Lithuanian ẽžeras, Old Prussian assaran (, “lake”) and the like. Orel simply derives it from jezer, which he considers a borrowing from Slavic with a metaphorical shift in meaning.
