Uncertain. Likely related with Proto-Tani *ju (“demon/evil spirit”), cf. Bokar u ju (“ghost”), also Old Chinese 鬼 (*kulʔ, “spirit, demon”), and Tangut 𗢛 (*ꞏju¹, “demon”), Horpa jə (“ghost, spirit”), and Nusu ʑui³³. Compare Lhao Vo yui, Lashi yu'.
