From Proto-Tocharian *kärst- (whence Tocharian A kärṣt-), from a form of Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker-. Cognate with English share, shear, Lithuanian kirpti (“chop, cut”), Latin cortex, and a huge number of other words. Also, possibly doublet of kertte (“sword”).
