From Proto-Tocharian *kärst- (whence Tocharian A kärṣt-), from a form of Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker-. Cognate with English share, shear, Lithuanian kirpti (chop, cut), Latin cortex, and a huge number of other words. Also, possibly doublet of kertte (sword).
