From Byzantine Greek κασοῦλα (kasoûla), from Latin casula (“hooded cloak”). Doublet of kaçule. Compare also Romanian căciulă. Attested in 1417 (Catasto Veneto di Scutari) as "Chisolichochi"[1] (i.e. Kësolëkoqi, modern Kësulëkuqi, "bearing a red riding hood", masc.).
