Turkish

Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish كوتی (kötü).

Perhaps related to göt (ass). For the sense development, compare Arabic دُبْر (dubr, buttocks->unfortunate). Initial /k/ preserved unvoiced perhaps to distinguish the word from göt.[1] However, the vowel of the last syllable of kötü cannot be explained morphologically which makes unlikely a derivation from göt (ass).[2]

Dankoff puts under Armenian գոդի (godi) in his list of Turkish words whose Armenian etymology is speculative or not firmly established.[3] To be compared to the Turkish dialectal form of Çanıllı kötü (weak, thin, sickly). For the sense development, compare with Persian پیس (stained, wrinkled, leprous) (archaic),[4] whence Turkish has pis (filthy) and Azerbaijani pis (bad, dirty).[5]
