Of uncertain origin; perhaps an ancient borrowing from Proto-Permic . Compare Komi-Zyrian (kosp, “gap, interval”) and Udmurt кусып (kusyp, “threshold”), which are of Proto-Permic origin, preserved in Komi-Zyrian кось (koś) and кост (kost, “gap, distance”), related to Proto-Finno-Permic *keske (compare Proto-Finnic *keski (“middle”)). The correspondence between Proto-Permic *s and Hungarian sz suggests a borrowing rather than inheritance. The explanation is uncertain as the fully corresponding meaning “threshold” is found in Udmurt only.[1] The suggestion of a split from Hungarian közép (“middle”) has phonetic difficulties; parsing as a compound is erroneous.[2]
