Etymology 1

From Proto-Finnic *kadot'ak, from Proto-Uralic *kaďa(w)- (to leave).[1] Cognates are found in almost every Uralic language, e.g. Northern Sami guođđit (to leave something, to depart), Skolt Sami kue´đđed (to leave smth), Erzya and Moksha кадомс (kadoms, to leave), Eastern Mari кодаш (kodaš, to stay), Udmurt кыльыны (kyľyny, to stay), Hungarian hagy (to let; to leave), Northern Mansi (χūĺ-, to leave), Northern Selkup (kuetja-, to leave (behind)) (Taz). Labialization of the stem vowel occurred in Proto-Finnic, compare Estonian kadu (loss), Estonian kaduma.
