Etymology

Etymology uncertain. Probably a deverbal from kajama (to echo), from Proto-Finnic *kajadak. Cognate with Veps kajata (to echo, verb) and Northern Sami gádja (echo, noun). Possibly from kaikuma, compare Finnish kaikua and kaiku, or vice versa (i.e. kaikuma derived from kaja or kajama).

  1. echo
    • 1967, Enn Vetemaa, “Pillimees”, in Loomingu Raamatukogu:
Mees köhis. Kaja veeres läbi poolpimeda kiriku, tõusis võlvide alla, kustus.
A man coughed. The echo breezed through the dark church, rose under the arches and died.
