Per Derksen, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kamptas (whence also Proto-Slavic *kǫ̃tъ (corner)), from Proto-Indo-European *kamp- (to bend, be crooked). Cognate with Latin campus, Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌼𐍆𐍃 (hamfs).[1] Also compare Proto-Celtic *kantos (corner), Ancient Greek καμψός (kampsós, crooked, bent).

The sense “piece, crumb” may be a separate word borrowed from Germanic: compare dialectal German Kampen (hunch of bread).[1]
