Per Derksen, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kamptas (whence also Proto-Slavic *kǫ̃tъ (“corner”)), from Proto-Indo-European *kamp- (“to bend, be crooked”). Cognate with Latin campus, Gothic 𐌷𐌰𐌼𐍆𐍃 (hamfs).[1] Also compare Proto-Celtic *kantos (“corner”), Ancient Greek καμψός (kampsós, “crooked, bent”).
The sense “piece, crumb” may be a separate word borrowed from Germanic: compare dialectal German Kampen (“hunch of bread”).[1]
