From Middle High German kassieren (West Central German, 14th c.), probably from Middle Dutch casseren (13th c.), from Old French casser, quasser (to annul). Ultimately from a merger of Latin cassāre and quassāre. The German may later have been reinforced also by Italian cassare, from the same Latin source.
