kiełbasa wyborcza f

  1. (idiomatic, politics) parish pump politics, pork barrel (gifts, especially food, offered to the electorate to influence voting)
    • 1896, J. Świętek, Zwyczaje i pojęcia prawne ludu nadrabskiego, volume 2, Akademja Umiejętności w Krakowie:
In order to prevent bribery from occurring in parliamentary elections, and to eliminate the influence of the so-called “election sausage,” the riverside people strive to change the parliamentary electoral ordinance; they wish that the electoral law would be expanded and that voting would be direct and secret.
  2. (by extension, figuratively, idiomatic, politics) unrealistic election promise intended to gain votes
Talking about what the electorate can gain can be misleading, and especially during campaign season, it's associated with promising the moon and the so-called electoral sausage.
  3. (by extension, figuratively, idiomatic, politics) policy change with popular appeal announced shortly before the election to improve the chances of the incumbent party or candidate
Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that he would distribute large sums of money to Poles shortly before the elections. This is a classic example of an election sausage but you have to admit that the money has been addressed quite precisely and will go where it is really needed.
