Calque of Swedish kyrkherre; kirkko (“church”) + herra (“master, lord”). Some sources claim the term is a mistranslation of Swedish kyrkoherde (“vicar”, literally “church shepherd”), but that term is more likely a later alteration of kyrkherre.
