kivi (genitive kiven, partitive kivie)
Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Maori kiwi, originally an onomatopoeic imitation of the bird's call. Originally the name of the bird, the English word kiwi soon became a term for people and things from New Zealand, and was thus also used, initially as a brand name, for the fruit, which is also from New Zealand.
