From a lengthened grade formation of Proto-Indo-European *(s)kep- (“to cut, cleave”). Cognate with Latvian kàpt (“to muck out”), Ancient Greek κόπτω (kóptō, “to strike, knock”).[1] An alternative theory from Smoczynski tentatively derives the word from Proto-Indo-European *kap- (“to hold, seize”).[2]

Of uncertain origin. Derksen and Smoczynski consider a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *kh₂p- (“to seize, hold”) possible.[3][4] Cognate with Latvian kâpt (“to climb”).
