  1. Obsolete form of kosmopolitisme.
    • 1790, Carel Frederik Bahrdt, Zedekundig handboek voor den burger-staat, tr. from German by Everhardus Volkersz, publ. by Hendrik de Haas, page 196.
But what does this mean? Does it perhaps mean as much as: I must hold this country, the national condition and the inhabitants of the same, as better than others; I must treat all other nations as enemies or at the least despise them? Methinks that such follies refute themselves; for it is easily understood, that patriotism should not be detrimental at all to cosmopolitanism, that is the general and all-encompassing love of humanity, that Jesus has commanded of us, and by virtue of which we must esteem all people from all corners of the earth as brother and children of our heavenly Father, — love them and desire and promote their welfare.
