Borrowed from Austrian German Grundbirne (literally “ground pear”), more specifically from Bavarian grumper, krumbeer, krumpir.[1] Suffixed with -i to resolve the word-final consonant cluster, compare cetli from Bavarian zettl or German Zettel (/ˈt͡sɛtl̩/) etc.
