According to one theory, from Proto-Finnic *kukkaro (compare Estonian kukkur, Ingrian kukkoro, Karelian kukkaro, Veps kukor), possibly borrowed from Proto-Germanic *kukur (compare German Köcher, Old English cocer), although there is no consensus about reconstructing this word to Proto-Germanic. This, alongside the irregularities with the Finnic cognates, may point to the words instead being more recent and potentially partially independent borrowings from Germanic languages.
