Akin to kokorík and dialectal kukurík (Convallaria polygonatum, angular Solomon's seed) and to Old Bulgarian кокоравъ (curly, crinkly) in relation with the collapsible upper slat of the anthers. Cognates include Russian кукуруза (kukuruza), Serbo-Croatian and dialectal Bulgarian кукуруз, Slovene koruza, Czech kukuřice.[1][2]
