Inherited from Ottoman Turkish قولاچ (ḳulaç)[1] or قولاج (ḳulac),[2][3] from Proto-Turkic *kulač.[4][5][6] Although Kashgari puts the origin as *kol (“arm”) + *ač- (“to open, to spread”),[7] Clauson finds this impossible.[4]
