From German quittieren suffixed with -era, from Medieval Latin quitāre (“to free from debt”), from Latin quietāre (“to calm”). Cognate of Danish kvittere, French quitter, Italian quitare, Spanish quitar. For the shift in sense from "settle a debt" to "equalize score", compare Swedish vedergälla, English pay back, English even the score, etc.
