Etymology

Probably derived from Proto-Norse *ᚲᚢᚾᛞᛁᛚᚨ (*kundila), compare Old Norse kyndill, Old Swedish kyndil (candle, torch), Norwegian Bokmål kyndel (torch). Another theory suggests a later borrowing directly from Old Swedish kyndil (candle, torch). Either way, ultimately from Latin candēla (candle). Cognates include Finnish kynttilä, Votic tšüntteli, Ingrian kyntteli and Livonian kīņḑõl. Doublet of kandela.
