lánytestvér (plural lánytestvérek)
The term for this sense was originally nővér, but it mostly took on the meaning of the term néne (“elder sister”), dated in this sense, so the compound lánytestvér is currently used in the generic sense of “sister” (except in the plural or with numerals). The parallel term fivér (“brother”) did not have this shift in meaning, so it can be used today equivalently with fiútestvér (though the latter term is gaining ground).
