Literally: "West Finnic", calque of Russian западно-финский (zapadno-finskij). At the moment of borrowing, Russian linguists distinguished between so-called "West Finns" (Baltic-Finnic people) and "Volga Finns" (Mari, Mordvinic and Permic people).
