From an unattested *lagamas (“laid, placed”) + -inas (“nominal suffix”), the former component the present passive participle of an unattested *lagoti (“to lie down”), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *lágīˀtei (“to lay (something)”), from Proto-Indo-European *logʰ-éye-ti, causative of *legʰ- (“to lie”). Cognate with Latvian lagaža (“den, bed”), Proto-Slavic *ložìti (“to lay”).[1]
