Cognate with Latvian logs, Old Prussian lanxto; further origin outside of Baltic unclear. Buck and Fraenkel suggest a derivation from lingúoti (to rock), referring originally to swinging windows (that is, windows whose panes swing in and out to open) while Smoczynski suggests a derivation from lañkas (bow), owing to the semicircular shape of a bow resembling that of many windows.
