Dutch
Etymology
Ca. 1900, from leren (“to learn, teach”) + -der (agent suffix). Doublet of leraar (“teacher”). In fact, leerder would be the expected form for the latter (and did exist in Early Modern Dutch, albeit rarely). The fact that the irregular form leraar was standardized allowed to form leerder anew with a different sense.
Pronunciation
Noun
leerder c (plural leerders, feminine leerster)
- learner (one who learns)
- Synonym: leerling
