From Proto-Balto-Slavic *lémešis. From the same stem as the verb lemt (to decide, to resolve) in its old meaning, “to break.” Cognates include Lithuanian lẽmežis (plowshare; part of the plow where the plowshare fits), Russian ле́мех (lémex, plowshare), Czech lemes, Polish lemiesz.[1]
