From Middle Dutch lijstre (“thrush”), from Old Dutch , from Proto-West Germanic *lī(h)strō, of uncertain origin. Possibly from Proto-Germanic *laikaną (“to move about”) or possibly related to Ancient Greek λιγύς (ligús, “shrill, piercing”). Etymologisch Woordenboek van het Nederlands suggests a borrowing from a substrate language because of the word's local range.[1]
