Romanian

Etymology

Possibly a substratum word, akin to or borrowed from Albanian magar. A less likely theory derives it from Latin onāgrārius (from onager) through a Vulgar Latin root *onagarius, which resulted in a hypothetical *unăgariu in early Romanian, leading to un *năgar and ultimately its current state (compare French onagrier).[1]
