Etymology

From Proto-Bantu *-dāŋgí̧. Cognate to Kamba mũangi.

Hinde (1904) records mrangi (pl. mirangi) as an equivalent of English bamboo in “Jogowini dialect” of Kikuyu, listing also “Ulu dialect” (spoken then from Machakos to coastal area) of Kamba miangi and mwangi, and Swahili mwanzi (pl. miwanzi) as its equivalents.
