From Proto-Finnic *mancikka. Cognate with Estonian maasikas, Karelian mančikka, Livvi mandžoi and Veps manźikäińe. Probably ultimately derived from the same root as mantu (“soil”) and mantere (“continent”) with -ikka. Compare German Erdbeere, Latvian zemene and Lithuanian žemuogė, derived from their respective words for "earth".
