Inherited from Ottoman Turkish معدنوز (maydanoz), a medieval borrowing from Arabic مَعْدُونِس (maʕdūnis), from Ancient Greek μακεδονήσιον (makedonḗsion, “Macedonian, Macedonian herb”). Doublet of bahteniz and bahdeniz, reborrowings found in southeastern dialects from the later Arabic form بَقْدُونِس (baqdūnis), and of Makedonya.
