Due to phonetic difficulties regarding , less likely from Proto-Albanian *mādzula, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂ǵʰ-ulo (small bean). Compare Aromanian madzãri (peas); see also the related Albanian modhull (vetchling, yellow vetchling, vetch), as well as Sanskrit माष (māṣa, Old World bean).
