From Proto-Bantu *mbògó. Hinde (1904) records mbogo as an equivalent of English buffalo in “Jogowini dialect” of Kikuyu, listing also “Nganyawa dialect” (spoken then in Kitui District) of Kamba mbo as its equivalent.
