mees (plural mese)
From Middle Dutch mêse, from Old Dutch *mēsa, from Proto-West Germanic *maisā, from Proto-Germanic *maisǭ (“chickadee, titmouse”).
mees f (plural mezen, diminutive meesje n)
From Proto-Finnic *mees. Possibly derived from Proto-Germanic *mēgaz (earlier Proto-Finnic *meexes), compare Gothic 𐌼𐌴𐌲𐍃 (mēgs, “son-in-law”), Old English mǣġ (“relative”) and Old Norse mágr (“male relative”), although this proposal is questionable for phonetic reasons. Cognate with Finnish mies, Livonian mīez, Votic meez, Ingrian mees, Livvi mies, Ludian miez and Veps mez'.
