Etymology

From Proto-Ugric *mälɜ (“warm, to become warm”) + -eg (nominal suffix). Cognates include Southern Mansi mǟli and Northern Mansi ма̄лтып (māltyp).

The meaning “gay” came into use in analogy with German warm (“warm; homosexual”), with its first attestation from 1908.
