Etymology

Uncertain. Probably of Slavic origin, compare Proto-Slavic *mogyla (sepulchral cairn), or an expressive creation based on the root moc-. The word found in Slavic languages seems itself to be of foreign origin.[1] There have been attempts to link it to a Gepid word, but this is unlikely. Compare also Albanian gamulë, and Romanian măgură.
