Etymology

Origin unknown. Possibly from dialectal măgulă (compare Aromanian mãgulã), from Albanian magulë (heap), metathetic form of gamulë, or an expressive creation based on *măc- or *moc-. Other less likely theories included Latin macula or *maculum, or a Proto-Slavic *mogyla. Compare also Greek μαγούλα (magoúla, hill) and Latin magulum (cheek).

This word has also been associated with the pan-Mediterranean substrate which is allegedly reflected in Basque mokor (lump of earth) and Sardinian mogoro (hill).
