From Proto-Finnic *nakris, compare Estonian naeris, Karelian nakris. This may be compared to an Ob-Ugric word *nëëɣər (“pine nut”), in which case their common origin would be Proto-Finno-Ugric *nëkrV-, but this is questionable due to the difference in meaning and as the consonant cluster *kr is of a shape usually occurring only in loanwords (compare kaura). However, no loan origin has been identified.
