From Proto-Vietic *ŋaːj, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *[m]ŋaaj (“human being; person”). Cognate with Muong ngài, Bahnar bơngai (“people, human being”) and Pacoh ngai (“they; them; their; others”). Also from the same root is ngươi (“pupil”).
